it is confirmed that Domino magazine has closed its doors! It is a sad sad day my friends....
Words cannot express my confusion and disappointment. Maybe if we ban together we could at least try to save the website?! Conde Nast, don't take everything we look forward to away! :*(

Free Encouragement!!

Woo-hoo!
Design for Mankind is doing a project and I think it's pretty awesome. It's 2-fold, and the second part is well on it's way! So go there now and be creative and spread the love! The deadline to submit your creations is Feb. 1st. The images above are some of my favorite Encouragements I found in the 11, yes 11, pages of colorful statements. I'm on out of town for work next week, but I think I will take a few of these with me to work on. Even if I never end up submitting them, ...which I am consistently guilty of starting projects and never finishing them.... I still love the idea of creating my own encouragements for my loved ones. :)

Works by Karen Kauffman

www.Karen Kauffman.com

A very good girlfriend of mine recently went to the opening reception of Karen Kauffman's "Rhapsody of Always-Is" at the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center. Her recollection of the exhibit to me was wonderful and she urged me to visit the artists website. I must say that I am pleasantly surprised! When I look at her work, I can feel the way she moves, I can see the way she works and there is something very comforting about that to me. Something that, as an artist, I relate to.
"There's a sense of satisfaction in the expressive, gestural strokes I make, in that they are uniquely mine, much like a person's handwriting or like the signature brushstrokes made in “Starry Night” that are uniquely Van Gogh. It is authentic to me as an individual and an artist."

R.I.P. Peter Dominic

Peter Dominic 1941 - 2009

I received sad news today that Architect Peter Dominic past away January 1st. Mr. Dominic worked for the company 4240 Architecture out of Denver, CO and had done several projects with the Disney team over the years. Including the Grand Californian Hotel, the Animal Kingdom Hotel and the Fort Wilderness Hotel.  Although I only had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Dominic a few times through work, his reputation throughout our offices was one of being "a superb architect and wonderful person" as said by architect Robert A. M. Stern on the 4240 website;

"Noted architect Robert A.M. Stern, FAIA, dean of the Yale University School of Architecture, was a friend, sometimes a design-team member, sometimes a competitor. He stated: "Peter Dominick was a superb architect and a wonderful person. His deep understanding of and love for the landscape and building traditions of the Rocky Mountain region can be seen in his distinctive architecture. He was a regionalist in the best sense of the term. For those lucky enough to have known Peter, the sense of loss is immeasurable; he was full of vitality, generous with his time, optimistic, and caring-a great human being. I will miss him very much. He will not ever be replaced among the worthies who have brightened our profession; and not ever forgotten by those whose lives he touched with his special grace. ~ Robert A. M. Stern

I know there are several of my colleagues who were deeply touched by the presence of this man in their lives. Throughout the halls here at Imagineering, I've heard words such as; captivating, brilliant, kind, articulate, and inspiring to describe him.  My deepest sympathies to his family and co-workers. Our profession has suffered a great loss.

January Loves

1. One day, when I have a house of my own, I will have an indoor/outdoor room for dining/playing and lounging! It will have a morrocan theme (and probably and outdoor bathtub - but that's another story..)  I HEART moroccan lighting! I love the colors, I love the intricacy, I love how the shadows dance and play on the walls. I recently came across this website called Just Morocco . They have all kinds of fun imported items, but the lamps are my favorite! These side tables are wonderful too!

2. Getting a kick out of this picture from the gallery on photographer Brad Elterman's site, from a party he attended in 1977 in a mansion behind the Beverly Hills Hotel.

3. Adoring the work of Frank Chimero! Especially his "Inspirational Design Posters" collection. Even though it is meant for graphic designers, I think most apply to interior designers as well. Here are a few of my favorites:

4. These chinese porcelain rings are so sweet!
Buy one before they are gone!
