....who have to face reality. I've often thought of how my life would've been different if I hadn't been influenced by Disney Fairytales. Specifically Disney because they were the ones who always changed the ending to be happy and wonderful. As you probably know, if you look up the originals, they are full of darkness and some are quite horrific, and some taught lessons. What if I had grown up learning of Alice's bad acid trip or that Cinderella's sisters cut off parts of their feet so they could fit in the slipper too? That Snow White was not awakened by true love's kiss, but by a hard shake that wiggled the caught apple from her throat? Would my emotional choices been different? Would I have dated different people? Treated them differently? Expected less or more from my relationships?
And in the end, here I sit, working for the Mouse himself, recreating and promoting all these stories that bring happiness and hope to little princesses around the world... Ironic, huh?
So below, find the work of photographer Dina Goldstein. In her work she thought what many of us have thought, What if they had been real? What if their world was the same as ours? What would happen if they had to face the same kind of realities who deal with on a daily basis? I think Dina's work is great. I particularly like the one of Princess Jasmine fighting in the war.
These images (Via Cup Of Jo Blog) Go right in line with a song I've been listening to lately....
Fairy Tale by Sara Bareilles. I put some of the lyrics below so you can see how they relate.
Fairy Tale by Sara Bareilles. I put some of the lyrics below so you can see how they relate.
"The tall blonde lets out a cry of despair saysWould have cut it myself if I knew men could climb hair
I'll have to find another tower somewhere and keep away from the windows"

"Snow White is doing dishes again cause
What else can you do
With seven itty-bitty men?"
"Cinderella's on her bedroom floor
She's got a
Crush on the guy at the liquor store
Cause Mr. Charming don't come home anymore
And she forgets why she came here"

With seven itty-bitty men?"
"Cinderella's on her bedroom floor
She's got a
Crush on the guy at the liquor store
Cause Mr. Charming don't come home anymore
And she forgets why she came here"

Katrina,
ReplyDeleteI love this. I was just at Disneyland yesterday and as I was watching the fireworks show and they were playing a song stating, "all your dreams come true if you believe" I thought to myself...Um, really? Because sometimes it takes a little more than just believing. Sometimes to achieve or dreams we must endure many setbacks, trials and tribulations. And even then there is no guarantee that we will in fact achieve our dreams. Sometimes life makes us loose sight of our dreams altogether. Maybe Disney should add a clause to their movies!
maybe they should change the lyric to "all your dreams come true if you work hard...."
